Gas mark conversion chart
Gas marks are the oven settings on UK and Irish gas cookers. Gas mark 1 is 275 °F, and each mark adds 25 °F; below 1 the marks halve (½ = 250 °F, ¼ = 225 °F).
| Gas mark | °F | °C (recipe) | Oven |
|---|---|---|---|
| ¼ | 225 °F | 110 °C | Very slow / very cool |
| ½ | 250 °F | 120 °C | Very slow / very cool |
| 1 | 275 °F | 140 °C | Slow / cool |
| 2 | 300 °F | 150 °C | Slow / cool |
| 3 | 325 °F | 170 °C | Moderately slow / warm |
| 4 | 350 °F | 180 °C | Moderate |
| 5 | 375 °F | 190 °C | Moderately hot |
| 6 | 400 °F | 200 °C | Moderately hot |
| 7 | 425 °F | 220 °C | Hot |
| 8 | 450 °F | 230 °C | Very hot |
| 9 | 475 °F | 240 °C | Very hot |
| 10 | 500 °F | 260 °C | Extremely hot (less common) |
Celsius values are the rounded figures printed in recipes. Fan (convection) ovens usually need a lower setting: follow the recipe or your oven manual.
How it’s calculated
°F = 250 + 25 × gas mark (gas mark 1 and above) · °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9
Step by step: gas mark 4
- °F = 250 + 25 × 4 = 350 °F.
- °C = (350 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 176.67 °C.
- Recipes round this to 180 °C.
Below gas mark 1 the scale halves: ½ is 25 °F cooler than 1 (250 °F) and ¼ is 25 °F cooler again (225 °F).
Exact Celsius for each mark: ¼ = 107.22 °C · ½ = 121.11 °C · 1 = 135 °C · 2 = 148.89 °C · 3 = 162.78 °C · 4 = 176.67 °C · 5 = 190.56 °C · 6 = 204.44 °C · 7 = 218.33 °C · 8 = 232.22 °C · 9 = 246.11 °C · 10 = 260 °C.
FAQ
Recipes round the Celsius figure to the nearest 10 °C, so the chart shows the values printed in recipes rather than exact conversions. For a fan (convection) oven, recipes usually call for a lower temperature; follow the recipe or your oven manual.
What is gas mark 4 in °F and °C?
Gas mark 4 is 350 °F, which recipes give as 180 °C.
What is gas mark 6?
Gas mark 6 is 400 °F or 200 °C, a moderately hot oven used for roasting and many breads.
How do I convert gas mark to Fahrenheit?
For gas mark 1 and above: °F = 250 + 25 × gas mark. Gas mark 7 = 250 + 175 = 425 °F.
How do I convert gas mark to Celsius?
Convert to Fahrenheit first, then °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9. Gas mark 5 = 375 °F = 190.6 °C, which recipes round to 190 °C.
